Song of the Day: Gold Soundz

It was 1994. Summer. You wandered the DC suburbs (or wherever you lived) aimlessly. You were angst-filled and shiftless. You worked a summer job doing “something close to nothing, but different than the day before,” as Prince once penned about working life.

Before the days of iTunes, you had to make your way to the strip-mall nightmare mega stores (Tysons Corner) to listen to music you didn’t already own. This dates me.

Pavement had just released their sophomore effort, “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.” So on this humid (high of 91) Washington summer day, I go back to Steve Malkmus et. al and to those gold soundz…

anybody that thinks pavement sounds just like wilco is too stupid for music.

Nice. Awful vid for a truly classic song on a masterpiece of an album.

Not too unlike the Carrot Rope video. At the same time, you have to appreciate that Pavement didn't try to be too arty in any of their videos. And yes, to hotrod's comment, there is no PaveWilco connection as some on these blogs have suggested. Ok, I'll give you that "Heavy Metal Drummer" and "Cut Your Hair" would be a good mash up.

    One of my favorite songs.

Heavy Metal Drummer don't you cut your hair….

Going to that PaveCo (WilMent?) show with you two was like being the only sane person at a Scientology convention. I now know what it looks like when a couple hundred shoegazers have a collective orgasm (much the same as it looks when they're enjoying their favorite song — or attending a funeral — as it turns out).

Ah — that felt good. I've been way too agreeable lately.
